Grab the kids, jump in the car, and go for a ride down the darkened streets to see what there is to enjoy. Inspired spooky dioramas range from gruesome homemade dummies to blow-up ghosts and moving skeletons to frightening robotic displays all illuminated in shades of orange, green, and purple lights. There are a lot of imaginative and creative Halloween displays throughout the neighborhoods to enjoy. “We go a little big on spooky for Halloween and we also go big for Christmas.” The “Big Guy” looms large at 2626 Geneva Street in Dearborn. And be on the lookout for a skeleton emerging from its grave and black cats with glowing eyes. Most of their decorations are handmade, including the ominous-looking “Big Guy.” When illuminated by torches and flickering flame lights, their entire front yard takes on a creepy orange glow. But beware of the giant spider web spun from the tall tree in the middle of their yard and “the Big Guy” who lurks around the corner. Megan Matteson and her husband Carl decorated their house at 2626 Geneva in a more festive fall theme complete with 37 pumpkins and several clusters of corn stalks. Around a flagpole are three rum-loving skeletons reminiscent of “The Pirates of the Caribbean.” Jack Skellinton and Sally from “A Nightmare before Christmas,” are also there. Up on a balcony are the Sanderson Sisters from “Hocus Pocus”. He blends several Disney-inspired Halloween themes into something fun and whimsical. Harrison made many of the props himself but also purchased a few as well. Evil pumpkins and ghoulish ghosts await the next victim to “the Carlysle Murder House” at the corner of Carlysle and Dallas Streets behind the Dearborn Schools Administrative building. “I was inspired by my trip to Disney World over the last few years and always wanted to do a haunted mansion theme,” Harrison said. A plethora of the evil dead descend upon a home at 4183 Gertrude Street in Dearborn Heights. A maniacal clown at 24525 Notre Dame encourages free hugs whereas the home of Ron Virga at 24710 Notre Dame features a 1300-pound pumpkin. Notre Dame Street in Dearborn Heights features some truly inspired and creatively illuminated displays. The “Game of Thrones” inspired setup with the frightening baby dolls is especially entertaining. In the same neighborhood, venture over to a couple of homes on Edgewood Street where the street begins to curve and look for the eerie purple and green glowing lights. When activated, the Soul Taker lifts a young girl up in its arms and appears to suck out her soul as a green smokey mist.Ībout one third of all the Romanchuk’s displays are handmade.Īnd wicked animatronics that also includes an electric chair. This year features, among other creatures, a hand-made 15-foot-tall skeleton and the “Soul Taker” animatronic. Pamela Romanchuk and her daughters continue to update their displays, whether it is rebuilding older ones or adding new ones to their front lawn. It gives them excitement and makes people happy, which is pretty cool,” said Ray Stachurski. In addition to selling certain items, they also take donations to help the animals at the shelter. As volunteers for the Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit, the non-profit that operates the Dearborn Animal Shelter, they decided to hold a fundraiser. Last year the Stachurski family decided to do something a little bit different. The Stachurskis estimate that they’ve spent close to $5,000 on all of their decorations over the past five years.
